OCPS employee receives Good Citizenship award

Orange County Public Schools employee Melissa Young was honored with a Good Citizenship award by the Orlando Police Department. Ms Young helped a mother and her young child by giving them shelter immediately following a strong armed robbery.

The crime happened in January as Ms. Young was leaving work for the day. As she was walking to her car, she noticed a woman and her daughter quite distraught so she asked if they were okay. They told her about the attack. Ms. Young offered shelter and safety to the victims by allowing them to wait in her car while she called 911 on her cell phone.

Ms. Young took action despite being told by the young mother that the suspect was still in sight. She also waited with the victim and her child until police arrived. Even though she had to pick up her own daughter clear across town, Ms. Young waited to give a witness statement.

For her willingness to help a stranger in need, Melissa Young was given a Good Citizenship award by OPD. Congratulations Melissa Young!
