The Republican-led Florida Legislature won’t appeal a ruling, after a judge declared the congressional map was illegally drawn to favor the Republican Party.
Last week, Circuit Judge Terry Lewis ruled Florida’s congressional map drawn by the Florida Legislature and adopted in 2012, was unconstitutional and should be redrawn.
While the Legislature has no plans to appeal the ruling, the proposal is that the existing map remain in place for the November 2014 election, so as to avoid confusion.
Meanwhile, on Monday, a coalition of groups, including the League of Women voters, filed a motion asking Lewis to hold a hearing to determine the next steps. The groups say, with the 2014 election a little more than three months away, “time is of the essence for drawing a remedial congressional plan.”
It is not clear who will be tasked with redrawing the map, given the illegal process in which Republican consultants, operatives and legislators engaged.
