Two people are dead and 17 others were injured after an explosion leveled two apartment buildings in New York City.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says: “There are a number of missing individuals,” but suggests some may have fled to safety, the Associated Press reported.

The city is expending every effort to locate the people who are still unaccounted for, de Blasio added.

The buildings were located in New York City’s East Harlem neighborhood, between 114th and 117th Streets, north of Central Park.

The explosion was heard miles around and smoke was billowing high about the city during the early morning hours, foxnews.com reported.

There is speculation that the explosion might have been caused by a gas leak.
