Although its doors won’t open formally until October 22, today Nemours Children’s Hospital held a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony, attended by area politicians, parents, children, advocates and community members.

The 95-bed state-of-the art facility located at the Medical City in Lake Nona, was planned with input from parents, children and caregivers, with the aim of ensuring that quality care, sensitive to the needs of kids, is delivered.  The hospital boasts a new Nemours children’s clinic, full-service emergency department, and extensive research and education facilities.

At one point during today’s ceremony, a group of children ran through a wall of ‘silly string’ as they entered the hospital for the first time.

The ceremony also recognized the Central Florida parents who worked closely with the hospital’s architect and interviewed finalists for positions at the hospital.

“What is most unique to me about the hospital is the amazing way Nemours chose to partner with families to shape this very important place,” said Lori Paul, Family Advisory Council member. “And, by working so closely with families, it ensures that families are at the center of every decision.”

“Together, we all have created a place of hope and healing for the children and families of Central Florida,” said Roger Oxendale, CEO of Nemours Children’s Hospital.

The 630,000 square foot hospital, with a price tag of $380 million, is the first phase, with additional expansion planned for 2014 to take care of anticipated future growth over the coming decades.

When fully operational, the Nemours Children’s Hospital is anticipated to create more than 800 new jobs in Central Florida.  It is located in close proximity to the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, Burnham Institute of Medical Research and Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
