National Association of Secondary School Principals Reacts to Federal Education Budget

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) reacted to the federal FY 2024 education budget.

“This education budget that avoids painful cuts while increasing the resources for high-needs students like mine means more skilled teachers and mental health supports in my school,” said Chris Young, principal of North Country Union High School in Newport, Vermont. “My thanks to Congress for listening to school leaders and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.”

The bill comes the week after 400 school leaders with more than 300 members of Congress and their staff to ask for their support for funding these programs during the National School Leaders Advocacy Conference, hosted jointly by the National Associations of Elementary (NAESP) and Secondary (NASSP) School Principals.

“In the face of massive budget cuts that threatened to erode the very foundation of our education system, the voices of 400 school leaders on the Hill last week and hundreds more who wrote their representatives saved students from the chopping block,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “The final FY 2024 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill prioritizes Title I, Titles II-A and IV-A, IDEA, and CTE program funding to truly support educators and students. With this victory, schools retain the funding necessary to support the students who need it most, to develop and sustain our educators and to literally save students’ lives with mental health resources. As we await its final passage and celebrate this achievement for public education, we also acknowledge the hard work ahead for 2025. NASSP will continue to engage with the administration and Congress to push for further investments that address the critical needs and educator crisis in our school communities.”
