About 10.8 million Americans without health care and who are eligible to buy insurance through the new health insurance exchanges will pay $100 or less a month in premiums because of tax credits, according to a new report from the Department of Health and Human Services.

Of those 10.8 million, 6.4 million Americans could pay $100 or less per month for the second-lowest-cost silver plan in their state’s marketplace in 2014, taking into account premium tax credits.  And another 4.3 million could also pay $100 or less using tax credits to purchase the lowest bronze plan available, according to the analysis.

“The health care law is making health insurance more affordable,” said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in a statement. “With more than half of all uninsured Americans able to get coverage at $100 or less, the health care law is delivering the quality, affordable coverage people are looking for.”

Florida has about 3.8 million or nearly one-quarter of its population without health insurance and it is anticipated that millions could end up paying $100 per person per month, utilizing tax credits.

Enrollment in health insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, begins on October 1, 2013.
