After being delayed for several weeks, the State FCAT test results were finally released today and middle school grades (6-8) led the pack with the greatest percentage gains of students proficient and above, in Reading and Mathematics. The historical view is that every grade is still trending upwards in academic student achievement.
Orange County’s overall average scores stepped up one percentage point in Reading (to 60 percent), Mathematics (to 65 percent), and Science (to 41 percent) compared to last year. Writing scores, using a variation of the state’s previous method of computation, indicate a decline of one percent (to 80 percent).
Sixth graders were the stars in Orange County this year compared to last year. They jumped five percentage points in Reading (67 percent proficient) and Mathematics (56 percent). Eighth grade scores went up four points in Reading (to 55 percent) and three points in Math (66 percent). Elementary and high school grades were mixed in all subjects including Science and Writing.
FCAT testing began 11 years ago and just since 2005, county overall average scores have risen nine points in Reading and Math.
Top performing schools in Reading were Lake Whitney Elementary 4th Grade (95 percent proficiency), Arbor Ridge K-8 6th and 7th grades (96 percent), and Winter Park High 9th grade (65 percent).
Top performing schools in Mathematics are Brookshire Elementary 4th Grade (97 percent), Arbor Ridge K-8 7th grade (99 percent), and Winter Park High 10th grade (83 percent).
Top performing schools in Science are Avalon Elementary 5th Grade (78 percent), Blankner K-8 8th Grade (74 percent), and Olympia High 11th Grade (57 percent).
