Merritt Island Driver Arrested for Hitting Child and Fleeing

A Merritt Island man who fled the scene, after seriously injuring a 7-year-old boy riding his bicycle on Thursday, in Brevard County has been arrested, Florida Highway Patrol said.

41-year-old Bryan Berka, who was driving a Ford pick up westbound on Alma Boulevard near George Edwards Court, just before 7:30 pm, struck 7-year-old Maximillian Gueera, of Merritt Island.   Maximillian was attempting to cross Alma Boulevard on his bicycle.

Berka struck Maximillian, then fled the scene.

Maximillian was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital with serious injuries

Deputies found Berka several blocks away in a Target parking lot, but he fled on foot.

On Friday, Berka was located at his mother’s home.  He confessed to hitting the child and leaving the scene.

Berka was arrested for leaving the scene of a crash.  He was booked into the Brevard County Jail.
