Mayor Dyer to Update on Community Venues Initiative

WHAT:        A year ago, the City of Orlando and the Orlando Magic broke ground on the new seven-story Amway Center.  Along with that groundbreaking came opportunities for millions of dollars in contracts for local, minority and women-owned companies.

On Tuesday, August 25, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will make an announcement about the progress of Amway Center and its significant impact to the local community.  In fact, the construction of the Amway Center is on track to have the largest minority and women participation of any public project in the State of Florida.

WHEN:        August 25, 2009 at 11 a.m.

WHERE:        BLUEPRINT Employment Office
1200 West South Street

WHO:        Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer
District 5 City Commissioner Daisy Lynum
Alex Martins, Orlando Magic
Companies and individuals working on the Amway Center

BACKGROUND:
Through the development of the Community Venue projects, the City of Orlando developed the BLUEPRINT initiative to ensure the $1.1 billion public project afforded maximum opportunities for Central Florida’s businesses and residents.

More specifically, the BLUEPRINT sets contracting goals for women and minority-owned companies, with a minimum of 18 percent to minority firms and 6 percent for businesses owned by women.  Additionally, the BLUEPRINT’s workforce initiative creates job opportunities for populations identified as the most underserved and underrepresented in Orlando: Parramore residents, ex-offenders and homeless.
