Junior Florida Senator Marco Rubio must have gone through some sort of epiphany when it comes to big corporations and their tax dodging tactics.
Asked last Friday by ThinkProgress if he was concerned that giant corporations like GE pay nothing in corporate income taxes, Rubio said, he is concerned and that’s part of the problem. Rubio made no attempt to defend corporate tax dodgers, like many of his Republicans colleagues. Rubio also pointed out that so many of these large corporations have been able to avoid paying their fair share because they can “afford to hire lobbyists to change the tax code or lawyers to figure it out.”
“…Here’s the problem. Big corporations and big companies, they’ve got the best accountants and lawyers in the world, they’ll always figure out a way to pay the least amount possible. The people who get killed through high tax rates are the little guys and the small businesses and the mid-size businesses. They can’t afford to hire lobbyists to change the tax code or lawyers to figure it out,” Rubio said.
ThinkProgress also asked Rubio if he would like to see Congress do more to close the tax loopholes that businesses are taking advantage of.
“Yes. That’s why I’d like to see the tax rate flattened and made uniform. So that’s one of the things we’ve always talked about is tax reform. Otherwise you’re creating a disadvantage. The big companies will always have an advantage over small business,” Rubio replied.
One could only wonder the reaction of big business and Rubio’s donors, regarding his stance on corporate tax dodgers.
We only hope that Rubio would not flip flop on this issue.
