Marco Rubio: A Peddler of Lies

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio

No doubt it made for a far more riveting story, but Tea Party darling, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), is not the “son of exiles,” as he has repeatedly told audiences, washingtonpost.com reports. A review of documents by that newspaper shows Rubio’s parents arrived in the United States from Cuba, more that 2 1/2 years before Fidel Castro came to power on January 1, 1959.

Nonetheless, Rubio has peddled his “son of exiles” story to gullible Floridians and rode that wave all the way to the U.S. Senate.

On one occasion back in November 2008, after he was nominated as the Republican candidate for Speaker of the Florida House, Rubio paid tribute to Cuban exiles and expressed his gratitude, noting that, “No matter what titles I might achieve in my life, I will always be the son of exiles.”  And quite naturally, he got a standing ovation at the time!

But, it seemed that the glib-talking senator lied about his past.

According to the Washington Post, Rubio’s office confirmed Thursday his parents did arrive in the United States in 1956, but noted that “while they were prepared to live here permanently, they always held out the hope and the option of returning to Cuba if things improved.”    Ostensibly, Rubio’s parents returned several times after Castro took power to ““assess the situation with the hope of eventually moving back,” the office said in a statement.”

Rubio spoke briefly on the issue yesterday and said his story was based on family lore. “I’m going off the oral history of my family,” he said. “All of these documents and passports are not things that I carried around with me,” washingtonpost.com reports.

  1. What a liar !! – I am surprised that when he went around saying this throughout his political career, his parents did not correct him. I guess he is a liar raised by liars who probably exploited other exiles as well. This man and his $500 haircut is an offense to any hardworking immigrant and exile. His actions as a politicians are an attack on the hard working middle-class immigrants and non-immgrants.

  2. Oh no! A Republican lied? How odd can that be?
But even worse than this lie was his thanking the French yesterday for bringing down Gaddafi and not one word of thanks to our own US pilots who flew missions right alongside of the French. What a slap in the face to our military!

  3. Rubio belongs to the same cesspool of DiazBalart brothers……Mario Diaz Balart was a dark State Senator, but he was Cuban, adjetive necessary to get any political promotions in Florida. He was elected chairman of the Commite in charge to re-structure zonification and the electoral districts. Then Mr Diaz Balart drafted an absurd Republican district joining the beautiful, American and rich Naples city, with the poor, ugly, dirty, 1000 % Cuban city of Hialeah. Do you wanto to know what did Mario Diaz Balart when the new district zonification was approved? ? Immediately he quited as State Senator, putting his name in the ballot as US Representative candidate…. in the district that he drafted himself !!!!!! What a champion of the morality and ethics!!!!…..And still is in the Congress. What a shame.
