A man who attempted to run down two Orange County Sheriff’s deputies with his vehicle, following a traffic stop is in custody, but not before taking deputies on a high speed chase through Orange County.
Deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop near Dean Road and the East West Expressway on Saturday around 3:17 pm, but the subject attempted to hit the deputy with his vehicle as he fled the scene of the stop. The subject next steered his red Ford pickup truck toward another Deputy’s vehicle which was parked on the side of State Road 417, looking for the truck that fled the initial stop.
The driver of the truck fled South on 417 and then East on SR 528 (Beach Line). Deputies say that speeds of between 70 and 80 miles per hour were reported, as the subject drove recklessly nearly causing at least one accident.
With assistance from Florida Highway Patrol and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, stop sticks were deployed which the subject hit around 4:00 pm. The truck’s tires were eventually deflated on 528 east of I-95.
Donald L. Berman, 53, the suspect, was taken into custody when his disabled vehicle was stopped on 528 near the Indian River Bridge. Berman was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and other charges are pending.
There were no injuries to law enforcement officers as a result of this incident and no traffic accidents have been reported.
