Main Street Alliance Calls on Senate GOP to Do Their Job

The Main Street Alliance, a national network of state-based small business coalitions, is speaking out about President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nomination. In a statement from the MSA Executive Committee Members, the organization called on Senate Republicans to do their job and fulfill their obligations to the American people. MSA and its state affiliates create opportunities for small business owners to speak for themselves on issues that impact their businesses and local economies.

“Our businesses don’t have room for employees who refuse to do their jobs, and there is no place in Congress for elected officials who simply refuse to follow the constitution and do their jobs to fulfill their obligations to the American people,” the group said.

This week, President Obama got the job done. He exercised his constitutional right and fulfilled his duty as President when he nominated Merrick Garland to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by the death of Justice Scalia. 

Weeks before the President made his announcement; Republican Senate leaders vowed to block the nominee’s confirmation, insisting instead on leaving the decision up to the next President. This stance is unprecedented, however, as no Supreme Court Justice nomination process has ever taken over 125 days and the President has over 300 days left in office.  

The American people voted the President into office twice and each time he was elected to a full four-year term. The voters settled this issue at the ballot box and made it clear that the responsibility to nominate candidates for the highest court falls on him until he completes the terms of his presidency.

Our businesses don’t have room for employees who refuse to do their jobs, and there is no place in Congress for elected officials who simply refuse to follow the constitution and do their jobs to fulfill their obligations to the American people. 

This unprecedented, undemocratic stance from the current leaders of the Senate is a political game they are playing at the taxpayers’ expense. It’s time for the current GOP Senate leadership to stop playing games and let the members of the Senate do their job.
