Lottery Marks 25 Years, $23 Billion to Education

Florida Lottery officials said Friday that the Lottery has put $23 billion into the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund since ticket sales began in 1988.

Officials at the agency are also marking 25 years since voters approved a state-run lottery on this day, Nov. 4, in 1986.

“Contributing $23 billion to education in Florida has made a significant impact – from classroom construction to funding education programs,” said Lottery Secretary Cynthia O’Connell. “One of the most rewarding contributions has been the fact that 500,000 students have gone to college because of a Florida Lottery-funded Bright Futures scholarship.”

Now, more than 13,000 retailers sell Florida Lottery tickets.

It’s changed a little since the first tickets were sold in ’88 – the Lottery announced Friday that players can now download a Florida Lottery app for their iPhone that will tell them the most recent winning numbers and jackpots.
