Libertarian Party of Florida Responds to Military Action Against Iran

The Libertarian Party of Florida responded to the military action against Iran.

The Libertarian Party of Florida strongly condemned President Donald Trump’s unilateral military action against Iran conducted without a formal declaration of war or explicit authorization from Congress.

Florida Libertarians said that the United States Constitution is clear: the power to declare war rests with Congress. The LPF pointed out that this safeguard was intentionally designed to prevent a single individual from committing the nation to war without debate, transparency, and the consent of the people’s representatives. They said circumventing that authority undermines constitutional governance and expands executive power in a manner dangerous to liberty.

The Libertarian Party of Florida said a military strike against Iran is not a minor or isolated engagement. Iran is a major regional power with significant military capabilities and alliances. Escalation risks retaliation against American personnel and civilians, destabilization across the Middle East, and the possibility of a broader conflict involving additional global powers. The path from limited strikes to large-scale war is often shorter than policymakers admit, the Libertarians said.

“Libertarians oppose unauthorized and open-ended military intervention regardless of which party occupies the White House,” said Matt Johnson, Chair of the Libertarian Party of Florida. “War must be defensive, constitutionally authorized, clearly defined, and limited in scope. Anything less endangers both American lives and American liberty.”

The Libertarian Party of Florida said history has shown that foreign wars frequently lead to expanded government power at home, increased surveillance, higher spending, inflationary pressures, and long-term erosion of civil liberties. These consequences are not theoretical; they are predictable outcomes of unchecked executive war-making authority, according to the LPF.

The Libertarian Party of Florida called on Congress to immediately assert its constitutional role, conduct open debate, and determine whether continued military action is lawful and justified.

“The American people deserve transparency, accountability, and adherence to the constitutional limits that protect our republic,” the party stated. “Liberty cannot be preserved abroad by abandoning it at home.”
