Former Florida Republican Party Chairman, Jim Greer has filed a lawsuit against his party claiming that a commitment to pay him $124,000 under a severance package has not been honored.
Greer filed the lawsuit on Thursday, one day after a criminal investigation was launched into his own dealings when he was party chair and following an internal audit which revealed he channeled contributions to a consulting company he owned.
Damon Chase, the attorney representing Greer, said the Florida GOP wants to smear his client, reports the Miami Herald. The party requested the criminal probe so as to avoid paying Greer more than $11,000 monthly, in addition to his healthcare insurance if he agreed to step down in January as party chairman.
But according to reports, Republican party officials have said that the severance package was not valid, as Greer never signed off on the offer before it was revoked one month later.
“It is abundantly clear that Jim Greer has some significant legal problems, and appears desperate to do anything possible to deflect those legal challenges at the further expense of the party,” said Ronnie Whitaker, the Republican Party of Florida’s executive director, in prepared statement.
