Jamaica army, police on full alert

The Jamaica army and police are on full alert as that country prepares for even harsher economic times.

From next Monday, consumers will have to pay more for gas, and several food items including, salt, fish, noodle soups and vegetables, among other items.

The price increases are aimed at closing a J$55 billion dollar gap in the national budget.

According to Prime Minister Bruce Golding, “There is speculation about the likelihood of tax increases and that there could be disturbances. But what purpose would that serve? Would it close the budget gap. Jamaica can no longer borrow to fill the gap in the budget.”

Jamaica has a history of violence and civil disturbances.

In April 1999, nine people lost their lives when violence erupted following a gasoline tax increase in that country.
