It’s National Influenza Vaccination Week

The Orange and Seminole County Health Departments are recognizing National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) in the effort to remind everyone the importance of influenza vaccine.  Flu cases are increasing acrossCentral Florida, and the flu vaccine can prevent the illness.  It is not too late to get a flu shot.

This year, NIVW is being observed from December 2-8.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend flu vaccine for all people 6 months of age and older. A flu shot is especially important for people at higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications and their close contacts. Because influenza viruses change every year, getting an annual flu shot is very important.

“Getting a flu shot is the most important preventive action that anyone can take. Pneumonia shots and whooping cough shots also offer great benefits and can help prevent deaths,” said Dr. Kevin Sherin, Director of the Orange County Health Department.

Vaccine is plentiful and available.  The vaccine is safe and effective.  In Florida, flu incidence usually peaks in February or March.
