The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office shared a recent success story that demonstrates how real-time translation technology is enhancing communication between deputies and community members who speak different languages.
The interaction occurred following a traffic crash involving a Spanish-speaking driver with limited English proficiency.
Using Axon’s real-time translation feature through his body-worn camera, the deputy was able to clearly explain the crash process, insurance requirements, and next steps.
The driver asked several questions, and the deputy was able to respond immediately, ensuring she fully understood the situation.
This clear, two-way communication helped prevent misunderstandings and allowed the interaction to proceed smoothly.
This innovative feature provides deputies with real-time language translations directly through their Axon body-worn cameras, helping bridge communication gaps during traffic stops and other encounters where language barriers may exist.
The translation feature supports 50 languages and provides deputies with immediate assistance in the field until additional resources can be made available.
“This technology helps us better serve every member of our community,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Clear communication is essential in law enforcement, and this tool allows our deputies to respond more effectively, safely, and with greater understanding, no matter what language is being spoken.”
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said it remains committed to leveraging innovative tools that enhance trust, transparency, and safety throughout the local Central Florida community.
