High Wind, Rain Batters Central Florida

Severe weather, including confirmed tornado sightings continued to sweep through Central Florida for a second day on Thursday, even as high winds and rain downed numerous trees and power lines in Winter Haven, Brevard, Seminole, Volusia, Orange, Osceola and Polk Counties.

Thousands of homes across Central Florida remained without power and there was damage to house roofs from fallen trees and high winds. According to Polk County Public Safety officials, a roof of a large tent collapsed at Lake Linder Airport in Lakeland with 70 people inside.  Six people from the tent were transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Power outages caused traffic signals to stop working and vehicle crashes have been reported. Several flights were delayed too, at the Orlando International Airport.

A tornado watch remains in effect until 8:00 p.m. for East Central Florida.
