Orlando’s Black Matriarch, Commissioner Daisy Lynum seems to have fallen off of the proverbial landscape.
Low key and nearly invisible is not a good thing for the Black Matriarch of Orlando. She risks obscurity and insignificance.
Maybe, its a strategy, a well thought out tactical step to regain the upper hand and champion the needs and wants of her District 5.
Of course, we all remember District 5. It is the the poorest of the Orlando districts, the one with the highest unemployment and the least going for it, unless of course you’re in the arena business.
The service industry in Lynum’s district took a big hit when the Magic moved into their new home on West Church Street. The site was previously home to Orlando’s largest Black business district and now its gone.
Lynum was unopposed in 2010. Well, not exactly. Her opponent fell victim to news releases relevant to his personal life and, poof, he was gone.
The last time Ms. Lynum had to face voters was January 2006, when she took 79 percent of the vote. Of the 1,037 votes that were cast, Ms. Lynum received a total of 826. This is a stunning result from a district that has a population of nearly 40,000.
It has been five years since Orlando’s Black Matriarch had to stand before voters. It has been five years since the District was sold a bill of goods called the Blueprints and 30,000 jobs.
Some observers report that she is finished in District 5. The District feels let down, disappointed, betrayed. Some say the Black Matriarch even violated them when the City took away the game-time parking revenue that was the only industry in the District. And now its gone.
If anyone sees Daisy Lynum, let her know some people are looking for her.
