Governor Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency Thursday because of the one-two punch from the drought and wildfires plaguing the state.

The situation is not as bad in north Florida as it is along the peninsula, but Rhonda Sutphen at the state division of Forestry says the rest of the state is very dry right now.

Central Florida has been getting afternoon thunderstorms since the beginning of the week, and while the rains have helped the local situation ease a bit, state officials say they aren’t nearly enough to end the drought conditions.
