Certain members of the Republican Party of Florida could be in some trouble, as the IRS has been asked to investigate those who used party issued credit cards to spend $3.6 million dollars. Moreover, if the party is not reimbursed for personal purchases, or taxes paid on the spending, the IRS could bring charges.
Over the course of 18 months, $3.6 million of credit card debt was racked up by members of the Republican Party of Florida.
Former House Speaker Ray Sansom charged $173,000 on his card.
But, interestingly, no one is claiming the rest of the bill which includes $4,000 for cigars, $13,000 for limousines in New York and $20,000 at a London hotel.
Lieutenant Governor Jeff Kottkamp denies ever using a party card. So does Governor Charlie Crist.
“It’s not necessary. Who needs it? It’s a waste of money. We’ve got to save people’s money. That’s why I’ve never had a party card,” said Crist.
