The Gantt Report
Every election year African Americans get their hopes way up! After listening to lying politician after lying politician we always think the political charlatans that swear they love us, say they will help us, pose as our benefactors and pretend to be our supporters will do what they say they will do on the campaign trail.
History has told the past and time will tell the future.
The Gantt Report feels that we can hardly count on African American political progress so God needs to send us another Moses.
Moses was born in a time when his people, the Children of Israel, were increasing in number and the Egyptian Pharaoh was worried that they might help Egypt’s enemies. Moses’ Hebrew mother, Jochebed, hid him when the Pharaoh ordered all newborn Hebrew boys to be killed, and the child was adopted as a foundling by the Egyptian royal family. After killing an Egyptian slave-master, Moses fled across the Red Sea to Midian where he encountered the God of Israel in the form of a “burning bush“. God sent Moses to request the release of the Israelites. After the Ten Plagues, Moses led the Exodus of the Israelites out of Egypt and across the Red Sea, after which they based themselves at Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments. After 40 years of wandering in the desert, Moses died within sight of the Promised Land.
God, if you can’t send us a modern day Moses, a capable assistant like Joshua will do.
At the Jordan River, the waters parted, as they had for Moses at the Red Sea. The first battle after the crossing of the Jordan was the Battle of Jericho. Joshua led the destruction of Jericho, then moved on to Ai, a small neighboring city to the west. However, they were defeated with thirty-six Israelite deaths. The defeat was attributed to Achan taking an “accursed thing” from Jericho; and was followed by Achan and his family and animals being stoned to death to restore God’s favor. Joshua then went to defeat Ai.
African American communities need community and political leaders that can deliver! We need representatives that will fight for us. We need leaders that will stand up and speak out about the political and community issues that are important to us.
There have been some “good” politicians in my lifetime but not at this time.
Instead of being represented by political puppets that suck up to their political parties and bow down to their political campaign contributors, we need Black, and other, politicians to be right, act right and vote right!
Asking for a 2012 Moses might be too much but at least God should send us another Adam Clayton Powell, Shirley Chisolm, or Harold Washington.
As a young man in Atlanta, I marveled at the way Maynard Jackson increased Black business opportunities for Atlanta’s Black business community.
When told Blacks couldn’t build airports, Maynard Jackson said, “If Blacks can’t get contracts, concessions or jobs at this airport, the airport will not be built!”
If you don’t know, more than a few African American entrepreneurs have made millions of dollars at Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport.
There are Black Democrats and Black Republicans on the 2012 election ballot but are there any Black warriors running for office? Are there any Black community saviors running for office this year?
Time will tell.
Maybe God did send us a Moses. The original Moses had his distracters, those friends that seemingly supported him but stabbed him in the back every chance they got. Or, the so called straw bosses who pander to the elite and caused the entire group to wander in the wilderness for 40 years. Maybe more of us should step up and support the Moses or Joshua that we have instead of standing around doing nothing but throwing stones and waiting for someone else to do all of the work.
