Forty-five thousand pounds of marijuana with a domestic street value of more than $3 million has been seized aboard a ship arriving from Jamaica.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) officers at the Port of Savannah discovered the drugs on the ship at the Garden City Terminal.
CBP Area Port Director for Savannah John Porter said the marijuana was uncovered during a security sweep using high tech x-ray equipment capable of scanning entire containers.
After scanning the container, a Chatham County Sheriff’s Narcotics canine sniffed out the narcotics, USCBP said.
A joint investigation is currently being conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other law enforcement entities to identify the individuals and/or businesses involved in the attempted smuggling venture.
