The only surviving former President of India will visit Dr. Phillips High School on Friday, October 23, 2009. Dr. Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002-2007. He will speak to nearly 700 students. Many of the students are enrolled in the International Studies Magnet Program at Dr. Phillips High. Dr. Kalam is an aeronautical engineer by training and has made what many consider significant lifelong contributions to the Indian Space and Defense Programs. He is popularly known as the Missile Man of India because of his contributions to the development of the ballistic missile and space rocket technology in India. Dr. Kalam is also a well-published author. His most recent book titled “India 2020” outlines his vision for India. Dr. Kalam is often referred to as “the People’s President” by some in India and they say Dr. Kalam is also seen as “the Modern Gandhi.” The media is invited to attend this rare and historic moment.
