Former Israeli President Sentenced to 7 Years for Rape

Moshe Katsav

Four years after being accused of raping an employee, an Israeli court on Tuesday sentenced Moshe Katsav, that country’s former president, to seven years in prison.

Mr. Katsav, who had consistently maintained his innocence, cried upon hearing the sentence and shouted at the judges that they had made a mistake, crying out: “It is a lie! The girls know it is a lie!”, reports the New York Times.

65-year-old Mr. Katsav was convicted last December of forcibly raping an employee, identified only by the letter “A”, her first initial, on two occasions while he was minister of tourism in 1998.  He was also convicted of sexually abusing and harassing a second woman and of harassing a third while he was president.
