Circuit Judge Terry Lewis dismissed most of the charges against former House Speaker Ray Sansom accused of violating state laws by directing a $6 million project, for what was supposed to be an educational building, but turned out to be an airport hanger, to Northwest Florida State College, where he subsequently took a job paying as much as $110,000 annually– a job that the grand jury discovered was never advertised and was just part-time.
However, Sansom has no cause to celebrate yet, as he still faces a charge of lying to the grand jury about funding for the college. Also, State Attorney Willie Meggs plans to appeal Lewis’ ruling.
“We think the conduct involved here was extremely wrong to the citizens and taxpayers of Florida,” Meggs said. “The grand jury listened to the evidence and they agreed.”
Even so, the Circuit Judge who dismissed the charges against Sansom, observed that the secretive nature of the budget process, “should give pause” to lawmakers and “anyone else who cares about public trust and confidence in our government institutions.”
Yes, Floridians, should be outraged!
