A Panama City woman who is one of the plaintiffs in the Florida-led challenge to the federal health overhaul has filed bankruptcy and closed her auto-repair business, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Mary Brown, 56, closed the shop in August and filed for bankruptcy with her husband in September.
The Journal reports that Brown’s financial troubles could create problems in the federal health-law challenge, which the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide in 2012.
In part, it could be harder for Brown to argue that she would be hurt by the health law.
Gregory Katsas, an attorney who represents Brown and the National Federation of Independent Business in the lawsuit, acknowledged to the Journal that Brown’s bankruptcy “throws some more wrinkles” into the case. But he also expressed confidence that, if necessary, NFIB could sue on behalf of other members.
