- LITERACY MONTH – ‘QUEST FOR LITERACY’

Description: Have you ever had that experience while reading, where the author’s words were so well-crafted, so rich, so vivid, that you found yourself swept away into another world?Bring your family and friends to the Elsa Kimbell Environmental Education and Research Center on September 12, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., and hone your narrative skills by participating in a creative writing activity. This event is open to all ages and will emphasize the natural beauty of southeastern Florida through the works of authors who made it their craft. Listen and receive inspiration as we recite select passages from ‘Life and Death on the Loxahatchee: the Story of Trapper Nelson.’ Then hike with us; collect your thoughts as we explore the meandering paths along the Loxahatchee River. Complete the process by capturing your thoughts, observations and descriptions of your walk on paper just as Vince and Jon would have.
There will also be a book discussion of ‘Jonathan Dickinson’s Journal’ starting at 11:00 a.m. Refreshments will be served at the book discussion. Hope to see you there!

Description: Come join the staff at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, and volunteers from around the area, on September 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., as we work together to maintain this unique piece of natural Florida. There will be a short presentation to emphasize what makes a plant a ‘non-native invasive,’ how they affect Florida’s ecosystems, what some of the plants of concern are at Jonathan Dickinson and what we can do to help.Participants will be working with park staff and can expect to pull weeds from roadsides along Park Drive for approximately 1.25 hours. A water cooler and light snacks will be provided. Participants must register in advance. Please come prepared with: gloves, comfortable, closed-toe shoes, hat, sunscreen, canteen or water bottle and, of course, the will to make a difference!

- 15TH ANNUAL EARTH DAY CELEBRATION
Bahia Honda State Park

Description: Bahia Honda State Park will be holding its 15th Annual Earth Day Celebration on April 10, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. There will be live music provided by local musicians. The local Moose Lodge, from Big Pine Key, will be cooking up some wonderful hot dogs, sloppy Joes and fixin’s for the event. Admission to the park is free (come early, parking is limited).Activities will include: face painting, a puppet show, fish printing and a sand sculpture contest.
The Save-a-Turtle organization will co-host the event, and have several activities and displays. They will also be selling raffle tickets to raise money for sea turtle research. There will be environmental exhibits and booths, marine life touch tanks and children’s activities. The Florida Keys Astronomy Club will set up telescopes with a special lens for viewing the sun.
