Description: Fort Clinch State Park will host a kite making workshop on September 12 as part of the celebration of Literacy Month. The program will present some of the history about the origins of kites as well as allow visitors to get involved by making and flying their own basic kites. The kites made that day will be from household items and can easily be replicated at home. Students will learn how to paint a gourd and apply botanicals. Students will also learn the specifications for making the birdhouses safe from predators.

Description: OLUSTEE BATTLEFIELD CIVIL WAR EXPO
Event features re-enactors portraying life in Florida during the Civil WarOlustee Battlefield Historic State Park will host its Civil War Expo on Saturday, September 26.
Visitors can share a camp meal with re-enactors and learn about the hardships and victories of war and enjoy authentic military drills, music and storytelling, exhibits, period artisans and the war’s traveling merchants.
The Battle of Olustee was fought in February, 1864 when Union troops marched west from Jacksonville seeking to deprive the Confederacy of food and other supplies from Central Florida. The Battle of Olustee resulted in a Confederate victory and the containment of Union troops to the Jacksonville area until the war ended nearly 14 months later.
The Civil War Expo will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. A donation of $4.00 per vehicle is requested. All proceeds benefit the Olustee Battlefield Citizen Support Organization and the Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park. Description: Introduction to Birding Courses
For Beginning BirdersEach course will include one and ½ hour of in-house instruction, a 15 minute break, and a one hour birding walk. The fee will be $10 and each class will be limited to 15 people. Visitors can register by leaving their name, address, phone number and email at Rainbow Springs 352-465-8555 and the instructor will call back if there are any questions. The course will cover an introduction to birding, comparison and use of field guides and binoculars and where to locate them, what characteristics are important to know in the identification of local birds and the course will close with a bird walk around the Rainbow Springs State Park headsprings. Participants are requested to bring field guides and binoculars if they have them and should bring a beverage and/or snack to the course.

For Beginning BirdersEach course will include one and ½ hour of in-house instruction, a 15 minute break, and a one hour birding walk. The fee will be $10 and each class will be limited to 15 people. The course will cover an introduction to birding, comparison and use of field guides and binoculars and where to locate them, what characteristics are important to know in the identification of local birds and the course will close with a bird walk around the Rainbow Springs State Park headsprings. This year’s Quilt Show theme is “Year of the Child” emphasizing “passing on the heritage of quilt making.” Quilts will be displayed throughout the park including the Stephen Foster Museum, the Stephen Foster Memorial Carillon Tower and the park auditorium. Visitors can enjoy boutiques, quilting supply vendors, demonstrations, lectures, a food concessionaire and door prizes.
A highlight of the weekend will be the Children’s Award Celebration and Quilt Raffle Drawing, planned for Saturday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m. The drawing is for a quilt which has a stunning display of Flying Geese blocks framed in black. This quilt was made and donated by The Lady of the Lake Quilting Guild. Tickets may be purchased at the Cousin Thelma Boltin Craft & Gift Shop where the quilt is on display.

A weekend of workshops, jamming, concerts, fun and fellowshipStephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park will host the Suwannee Dulcimer Retreat on November 13 and 14. This event invites participants to a weekend of fun and fellowship along with workshops, jam sessions and evening concerts.
The Suwannee Dulcimer Retreat offers in-depth instruction and techniques on the mountain dulcimer, hammered dulcimer and autoharp musical instruments. Traditional music is celebrated with workshops offered for beginning, intermediate and advanced students, taught by nationally recognized instructors.
This year’s mountain dulcimer instructors include performer and luthier Gary Gallier Joining Gallier are Florida’s own mountain dulcimer instructors Bing Futch, Mary Z. Cox, Susan Boyer Haley, Aaron O’Rourke and retreat director David Beede.
The Suwannee Dulcimer Retreat also welcomes performing national performing artist Christie Burns and Florida’s own Ray Belanger for instruction on the hammered dulcimer. The autoharp instructors are performer Ivan Stiles and Tampa’s own Cheryl Belanger.
Concerts featuring these masterful instructors are scheduled for Friday and Saturday evenings in the park auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for public admission are $10.00. Admission to the two-day event is $85.00, which includes all workshops, jam sessions, concerts and discussion groups. Registration is now open and forms are available at Dulcimer Registration Form. After October 30, there is a $15.00 late registration fee.

Description: SUWANNEE OLD TIME MUSIC WEEKEND
Participants invited to a celebration of Old Time musicStephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park is now accepting registration for the Suwannee Old Time Music Weekend on December 4-6, 2009.
This three day event offers participants in-depth instruction in old time music techniques on the banjo, guitar, fiddle and voice for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. Join this year’s special guest instructors and nationally known performers, Mac Traynham, Shay Garriock, and, Jenny Traynham.
Concerts will be held on Friday and Saturday evenings in the park auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for public admission are $10.00. Friday evening is the Florida Masters Concert featuring Tom and Kay Van Treese, Gail Gillespie and Dwight Rogers. Saturday evening will feature an Instructor’s Showcase Concert with Florida favorites, Chuck Levy, Lloyd Baldwin, Greg Allen and Chuck Anton.
Admission to the three-day event is just $225.00, which includes all workshops, jam sessions, discussion groups, concerts and meals. A spouse program is being offered for just $85.00. Registration is now open and forms are available at Suwannee Old Time Music Weekend Registration. After November 20, there is a $15.00 late registration fee.

Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park
Date: Friday through Sunday, February 12 through February 14, 2010. Saturday’s battle begins at 3:30 p.m. and Sunday’s battle is at 1:30 p.m.
Description: The Battle of Olustee was fought on February 20, 1864. Full-scale artillery, mounted cavalry, and three African American regiments, including the 54th Massachusetts took part in the fighting that day. The Battle of Olustee was Florida’s largest Civil War battle, resulting in 2,807 casualties and a Confederate victory. More than 2,000 living history reenactors gather each year at Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park to present historically accurate portrayals of the war’s toll on both civilian and military life. Medical demonstrations are planned twice daily on Saturday and Sunday. Period music concerts, military camps and drills, and the lives of both soldiers and civilians during the war are portrayed by reenactors. The living history weekend features a Civil War-era battle reenactment on Saturday, as well as the reenactment of the Battle of Olustee on Sunday. Food concessions will be available. Pets are not allowed at Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park during the reenactment.Educational programs are planned for Friday’s School Day when both public and private school students are invited to attend the reenactment. Description: The Friends of O’Leno will be hosting the third annual O’Leno Ole’ Chili Cook-Off on March 27, 2010, at O’Leno State Park. This year there will be two categories for the cook-off. A Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc. (CASI) sanctioned chili cook-off, open to all members of CASI and anyone wishing to enter under CASI rules. Contestants must be 18 years old or older. Rules can be found at Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc.. Trophy’s will be awarded to the 1st – 10th place winners in the cook-off and 1st – 3rd place winner of the showmanship competition. Turn in time for the chili in the CASI division is 1:00 p.m.A second category has been added open to anyone wishing to enter a great pot of chili! All ages welcome. Trophy’s will be awarded for the 1st – 5th place winners in the open competition. Turn in time for the chili in the open division is 1:30 p.m.
Registration is from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m., with an entry fee of $20.00 per team for both the CASI and open divisions. A complementary breakfast will be provided for all contestants from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
Pre-registration is encouraged, and will begin on March 1, 2010. Forms are available by contacting the Friends of O’Leno at Friends of O’Leno or by calling Harriet Walsh at 386-454-4806.
Spectators may purchase sampling kits and vote for the “Peoples Choice Award”. One award will be presented to the overall winner of both the CASI and open division.

Description: The Friends of Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park will hold an Easter Egg Hunt for area children. Activities include an Easter Egg hunt for plastic eggs, which can then be redeemed for goodies and trinkets. Description: Rainbow Springs State Park will celebrate National Environmental Education Week. On Wednesday, April 14th a Ranger Guided Canoe Tour will be led down the beautiful Rainbow River at 10:00 a.m. Please call 352-465-8555 for RSVP and information. Join Park Staff and Volunteers to listen to local music with an important environmental message during Music on the Grounds, an open mic and coffee house event on April 17th after sunset! Bring your coffee mug for free coffee, an instrument if you have one for open mic, some environmental poetry, or just your love for the outdoors and music. For National Environmental Education Week experts will be on hand during the event to answer questions, distribute information, and speak briefly on environmental issues. This event takes place after sunset with regular park admission. Music on the Grounds is a monthly event sponsored by the Friends of Rainbow Springs State Park.
