- READING IN THE RAVINES
Ravine Gardens State Park
Date: September 12, 2009 10:00 a.m. at the Civic Center
Description: Celebration of Literacy will include a day of Reading in the Ravines. Children and children at heart are invited to join us for a couple of environmental stories read by volunteers and one of our own park rangers. The Putnam County Library will hold a book raffle and be on hand for questions and information on up coming library events. Following the stories we will enjoy a walk through the gardens and beautiful woodsy terrene of the ravines. Bring your camera and binoculars for observing the flora and fauna. This fun filled day will begin in the Civic Center.

Colt Creek State Park

Description: Come spend a couple of hours in the park and learn all about snakes of florida and check out books from the local book mobile that will be on site during the event. Directions:The park is located 16 miles north of Lakeland just south of the Withlacoochee River off of State Road 471. From I-4 take exit # 32 and proceed north on US 98 approximately 13 miles, turn right onto State Road 471. From I-75 take exit # 301 and proceed east on State Road 50 for approximately 13 miles, turn right onto State Road 471. The entrance to the park is 3.8 miles north of US 98 and 17 miles south of State Road 50.

- FRIENDS OF LAKE LOUISA STATE PARK 5K
Lake Louisa State Park
Date: Saturday, September 12, 2009, 7:30 a.m.
Description: Run or walk this USATF certified 5K (3.1-mile) paved course through Lake Louisa State Park. Water will be available on the course and at the finish line. The race is limited to 250 participants and will have 8 age groups (8-14, 15-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-69, 70 and over). To ensure you get the right size T-shirt, register before August 29. Champion Chip timing will be provided by Sommer Sports. Trophies will be given to the top over all female and male finishers and awards will be handed to each age group’s top female and male participants. For safety reasons, headphones, baby joggers/strollers, bicycles, roller skates, in-line skates, and pets will be prohibited from the race course. Description: Join us and listen to children’s stories about the parks beautiful butterflies! The stories will be read by a park ranger and the children are encouraged to bring their favorite butterfly books to share with the group. Of course, songs and dancing will be combined with the reading! After story time we’ll all go out into the lovely botanical garden for games and butterfly viewing. The children will have the chance to see firsthand how a caterpillar develops into a butterfly; and play the butterfly and bumblebee game. The Flagler County Public Library Children’s Department will also be on hand with crafts for the children to do and library program information prizes and certificates will be awarded.

North Peninsula State Park
Date: Registered participants should check in between 8:30 – 9:00 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2009.
Description: Volunteers are invited to participate in the Ocean Conservancy’s annual International Coastal Clean-up. This worldwide annual event, hosted by the Ocean Conservancy and Volusia County Environmental Management, features many locations along the coast for people interested in helping clean up the beach. Participants can register to take part in the cleanup at the Ocean Conservancy web site www.oceanconservancy.org/cleanup. Preregistered participants will receive a Coastal Cleanup water bottle and memento. Participants are encouraged to bring used, plastic shopping bags to separate recyclables from trash and drinking water, and should wear sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and comfortable clothing. Description: In conjunction with National Public Lands Day, make a difference in the community and participate in a morning roadside clean-up along Old Dixie Highway. This event will begin 8:00 a.m. at the Fairchild Oak, We will begin with registration and a brief meeting of objectives and safety; breakfast and refreshments will be provided. We will begin the clean-up heading south on Old Dixie Highway and will continue until 11:00 a.m. followed by a closing meeting back at the Fairchild Oak. Safety vests, gloves, garbage bags, and insect repellant will be provided. Safety is always a factor; participants must be 16 or older.

Sebastian Inlet State Park
Date: October 1 to 3, 2009 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Description: The U.S. championship waveski competitors will come from all over the world, trying to take home the coveted open championship trophy. Waveski surfers are seated and stapped in on a 7′ to 9′ board with a double sided paddle in hand. They ride the waves similar to surfing with spectacular maneuvers that leave spectators wondering ‘how did they do that.’ Contest dates and time vary according to surf conditions.

Description: Children 15 and under test their angling skills with the tried and true cane pole. All children must have a parent or adult with them to register. Trophies will be awarded in three different age groups for the largest, the smallest and the most fish caught. Everyone will win something. Bait is provided by the Friends of DeLeon Springs . Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach

Description: Join us on October 3, 2009 when regional folk musicians and storytellers will gather to celebrate the life and music of the late Gamble Rogers, who lost his life in 1991 attempting to rescue a drowning man while camping at the park.The celebration will include a day of folk music and storytelling by artists who knew and performed with Gamble Rogers during his career. There will also be storytelling workshops by the Tale Tellers of St. Augustine, nature and history themed exhibits, guided tours by the Flagler Audubon Society, food, children’s activities and more! This event is sponsored by the Friends of Florida State Parks, Inc.

Directions: From I-95: Whether you are traveling north or south on I-95, take exit 284 (State Road 100). Turn east onto State Road 100 and travel approximately 3 miles till you reach A1A (and the ocean). At the light turn right (south) and travel approximately another 3 miles. Traci Anderson of Seminole Springs Herbs Farm will present a workshop “Fresh Flavors for Fall” at 11 am. Whether you have a garden or container on your patio, learn what to plant, how to plant, how to make them grow and the correct time to harvest. Fresh herbs and vegetables will add zest and spice to your fall meals. At 12:00pm, The executive chef from the Hilton Garden Inn will provide a cooking demonstration, showing various dishes that can be prepared with herbs. USDA Certified Organic herbs and vegetable plants will be available for sale in conjunction with the Friends monthly Second Saturday Plant Sale. Herb themed baked goods, beverages and Park themed merchandise will also be on sale. Visitors will find unusual and hard to find plants, a portion of which were propagated and grown in the Park by volunteers

Description: Come out and plan to clean up the community and springshed of DeLeon Springs. Meet at the entrance to DeLeon Springs State Park DeLeon Springs. Participants will be assigned an area to pick up trash in the DeLeon Springs area. After the clean up, participants will be provided free admission to DeLeon springs state park . Participants are encouraged to wear sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, work gloves, and comfortable clothing. Lake Griffin Spook-tacular
This fundraising event is a safe and fun alternative to traditional trick or treating and includes games and prizes, a Trick or Treat Lane, candy, arts and crafts, costume contest, face painting and a chilling atmosphere for all ages. Beginning at sunset, our Trail of Terror will have spine-tingling surprises that will test the nerves of the older ghouls. All activities will take place in the park’s picnic area and nature trail. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The costume contest will be held from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm with judging at 6:45 pm. Participants must be present at judging in order to win. Please remember this is a family event and all costumes should be tasteful. Contest entry will require 4 activity tickets for each contestant. Costume contest winners will receive a rod and reel combo, a tackle box, park day use and one hour canoe rental pass and a variety of other items. Prizes are subject to change without prior notice.
“Food and beverages will also be available, so come hungry!”

Ravine Gardens State Park

Description: Take the family to Ravine Gardens and spend a day full of wonder and enchantment in a fall festival atmosphere. Children will be able to play games and trick-or-treat in a safe, fun environment, provided by local businesses and organizations. The little ones can bounce like fairies on flowers in the moonwalk. Childern can be transformed into their favorite fantasy creature at the face painting booth. Hands on crafts and activities are available for the kids and kids at heart. Take the family for a walk through the Enchanted Forest and Candy Land. A wagon tour will take you on a trip through the enchanted ravines were you will enjoy whimsical and magical fairytale scenes. More surprises to come. Refreshments will be available for purchase. We are in need of participants to help make this event a success. We are looking for actors, prop makers, wagon story tellers and fresh ideas from individuals, families, businesses and civic organizations. There are many positions available. - OBSTACLE TRAIL CHALLENGE
Lake Louisa State Park

Description: 125 pre-registered riders will be tested on horsemanship and riding skills on various obstacles along some of the park’s beautiful equestrian trails. Judges will be timing and grading the performances. There will also be a Halloween costume contest for registered participants which will take place before the award ceremony. Description: Parents mark your calendar for the “Holiday Tea Party” hosted by Mrs. Claus at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. The tea party will be offered to boys and girls ages 5-8 years old and will be held Saturday, December 5th at the Visitors’ Center. Mrs. Claus will welcome children at two different seating times of 10:00 am and 1:30 pm. Children should dig through Mom and Dad’s closet and come to the party dressed in their best attire which could include old jewelry, ties, and garden hats. Also, children can bring along their favorite stuffed animal to join in at the tea party festivities. Some of the activities will include sharing a Christmas wish list session with Mrs. Claus, storytelling, a souvenir photograph with Mrs. Claus, a holiday dance presentation by the Talent Team Youth of Palm Coast, and of course tea and cookies. Also, Mrs. Claus will present each child with a Christmas bag filled with holiday goodies to take home. The tea party fee is $20.00 per child and includes souvenir photograph with Mrs. Claus, refreshments, holiday bags and the park entrance fee. Spaces are limited and advance reservations are required.

Sebastian Inlet State Park
Date: April 24, 2010, 7:00 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Description: The premier of the Night Sounds at Sebastian Inlet State Park Concert Series showcases recording artists, Lee Hunter and Arvid Smith, known as Tammerlin. Tammerlin have been placing their own stamp on folk/roots music since 1992. Their five C.D.’s have clever, thoughtful original songs and traditional tunes. What you will hear is exceptional guitar work and melodies that stick in your head and make you want to sing along. The concert will be at the palvillion on Coconut Point, located on the south side of Sebastian Inlet, over looking the water.

Directions: From Indian River County: From Interstate 95, take the Fellsmere/Sebastian exit and go east (towards Sebastian) on County Road 512. After a short distance, turn right on County Road 510. This road will intersect with U.S. Highway 1. Continue east, over the Indian River, to State Road A1A.
