‘Florida is in Crisis’ says new leader of League of Women Voters

The new leader of the League of Women Voters of Florida is taking aim in Tallahassee for a more accountable government. After growing the Orange County League faster than nearly any in the country, Deirdre Macnab, of Winter Park, is now preparing members across Florida for battle. The state League has signed on as part of the Fair Districts Florida bi-partisan citizens coalition pushing for a statewide referendum to end gerrymandering.

As the new president of the statewide organization, Macnab says, “Florida is in crisis, facing extraordinary challenges in employment, housing, education, and healthcare. Meanwhile our elected officials are gerry rigging the political landscape, and there is no change in sight without fairly drawn election districts,” stated Macnab. “Floridians deserve a government that is accountable to the people.”

The three main action items for the Florida League are:
-PASSAGE of FAIR DISTRICTS Florida: A pivotal change to the state constitution which would provide a higher level of accountability for elected officials,
-TAX REFORM with a focus on closing loopholes and corporate tax breaks, to provide a more equitable and constructive tax structure,
-PROTECTION OF VOTER RIGHTS

Macnab cites the caliber of the new state board, and growth in the group’s numbers as just one of an arsenal of tools that will help the League play an even greater role in improving Florida’s state and local government.

The officers and board joining Macnab represent areas throughout the state of Florida and include seasoned League of Women Voters members and leaders, including a former state legislator, national CEO, citizen activists and professional men and women from many walks of life.

For information on the new Board, visit the League’s new website: TheFloridaVoter.org  and link to bios and photos page. Twenty-nine leagues across the state provide a grassroots activist network expanding an informed voter turnout, with a heavy emphasis on young and first time voters.

Long one of the most trusted non-profits in the country, the League will turn 90 next year on the same anniversary of women receiving the vote. With its mission  to encourage informed and active participation in government, the women and men who are League volunteers across the state host candidate forums and an  array of activities to help citizens increase their understanding of major public policy issues, as well as influencing public policy through advocacy and education.
