Florida Gov. Vetoes Bill to Relax Background Checks

Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday, rejected a measure (SB 1992) that relaxed background check requirements for some social service workers who have limited contact with clients.  It is the first time that Scott has vetoed a bill passed by the Florida Legislature.

In vetoing the bill, Scott said the state has an obligation to protect its most vulnerable residents.

The bill came in response to legislation passed in 2010 that some said went too far by requiring checks on volunteers, such as those who work for Meals on Wheels, who have minimal contact with clients.

“I feel strongly that we have an obligation to ensure that these vulnerable members of our communities are protected, especially in their homes,” Scott said in his veto message.

The governor, however, said he will issue an executive order retaining a portion of the bill that sets up an inter agency workgroup to streamline background checks and share information.
