The Florida Democratic Party slammed the appointment of Lt. Governor Jeanette Nuñez after she was selected as interim President of Florida International University.
“Once again, Republican hypocrisy knows no bounds,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “Just a few weeks after she backflipped on protecting in-state tuition for Dreamers — Jeanette Nuñez will now lead one of the most diverse colleges in the state. With her record, how can she be trusted to lead the college with the largest population of Hispanic students in the country?”
The Florida International University Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Jeanette Nuñez. But Florida Democrats attacked Governor Ron DeSantis and said it was a continuation of a larger effort by Republicans.
“Her appointment is just the latest move in Ron’s hostile takeover of Florida’s colleges and universities, as he continues to install political hacks and loyalists to push his partisan agenda,” Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried said. “It has nothing to do with improving Florida’s cratering educational outcomes and everything to do with rewarding loyalty.”
Lieutenant Governor Nuñez is a proud graduate of Florida International University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Political Science and a master’s degree in Public Administration.
Jeanette Nuñez was born and raised in Miami. She was elected as Florida’s first Hispanic female Lieutenant Governor in 2018 and was subsequently reelected in 2022. As Lt. Governor, she was tasked with overseeing the Florida Department of Health, as well as serving as the Chair of Space Florida. Additionally, she serves as Chair of Florida’s Cybersecurity Task Force and is also a member of the Statewide Council on Human Trafficking.
According to reports, the appointment expected to take effect February 17th. That means Republican Governor Ron DeSantis will have soon choose a new lieutenant governor for Florida.
