A fatal crash on Sunday morning on I-95 near Mile Marker 292, north Palm Coast Parkway killed 5 adults and left four children hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said that a 1999 Ford SUV, driven by Hugo Campos-Leon of Eustis, was traveling southbound around 11:00 am on Sunday morning in the center lane on the I-95, north of the intersection of Palm Coast Parkway, when the rear tire of the vehicle blew out.
Campos-Leon, the driver, lost control of the SUV as it began to spin across all southbound travel lanes to the right southbound shoulder. Troopers said that the vehicle then struck a series of trees where it overturned onto its right side. Several passengers were ejected from the vehicle. Five adults were killed and four children were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. They were all from Eustis.
The deceased are:
- Hugo Campos-Leon, the driver, died on the spot.
- Fidel Salgado, a passenger died at the Halifax Hospital in Volusia County
- Ana Lilia Figueroa-Garcia, 34, also died on the spot.
- Maria Mercedez Corona-Leon, 28, was killed on the spot.
- Maria Celia Leon de Corona, 48 years, also died on the spot.
The children who survived the crash and are hospitalized are:
- Jairo Salgado, 11 years, was rushed to the Halifax Hospital
- Aldo Villanueva-Leon, 6 years, was taken to the Florida Hospital in Flager County
- Liset Villannueva-Leon, 6 years, was taken to the Halifax Hospital in Volusia County
- Dayanna Salgado, 6 years, was taken to the Florida Hospital
