The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was awarded a traffic safety subgrant in the amount of $175,000 by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for the Triple L: Listen, Learn, and Live Motorcycle Education and Safety Program.
The purpose of the program is to educate motorists in Hillsborough County about motorcycle safety and to conduct high visibility enforcement activities in an effort to decrease motorcycle crashes.The funding will be used to support enforcement activities and distribute educational materials to drivers.
Florida motorcycle rider fatalities represented 10.7% of all fatalities in the United States. The Traffic Safety Facts 2020 Data-Motorcycles reported that Florida had 564 total motorcycle rider fatalities, the highest of any state in 2020.
In a December 2022 analysis of the top 26 most populous counties in Florida, Hillsborough County ranked at number four by FDOT for total injuries and fatalities for motorcyclists between 2017 and 2021.
The funding will be used to support enforcement activities and distribute educational materials to drivers. The program will run through September 30, 2024.
