Secret tape recordings of staff in the office of Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll have prompted the attention of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which has launched a “preliminary investigation” into the recordings.
Florida law prohibits the recording of conversations unless both parties are aware that the taping is taking place.
“We are conducting an inquiry into the audio recordings of conversations made between staff,” said FDLE spokeswoman Heather Smith.
FDLE was called in to investigate a tape recorded conversation between former Carroll spokeswoman Carletha Cole and chief of staff John Konkus.
Cole was fired from her position after making disparaging remarks to a newspaper about the lieutenant governor’s office staff. The comments were posted in the Florida Times-Union, which also posted a copy of the audio recording on its website.
