FAMU Halts Probe Into Anti-Hazing Policies

Florida A&M University announced it will delay its investigation into anti-hazing policies because of ongoing investigations by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Board of Governors.

The task force, appointed by FAMU President James Ammons, was set to begin work Monday.

“Based upon input from the Governor’s Office and in light of the recently announced November 29 investigation by the Board of Governors, I believe it will be prudent to postpone the work of the task force to allow this and other investigations to be pursued with our full cooperation and attention,” Ammons said in a statement released early Friday.

Gov. Rick Scott confirmed after a Friday morning press conference that his chief of staff, Steve MacNamara, had contacted FAMU to ask the college to postpone its inquiry for now.

“I think it makes sense for them to allow the FDLE investigation to happen first,” Scott said.
