Evans High School senior takes two top national honors

Shardy Camargo will graduate from Evans High School looking back on a senior year that brought her national recognition and scholarship dollars. Her first national honor came on May 4, 2009 in Washington, D.C. Shardy was named one of our nation’s top 10 youth volunteers for 2009 winning the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. She was chosen from nearly 20,000 applicants. Shardy’s honor comes as a result of the book she and fellow Evans Beta Club members co-authored entitled, “Everyone Has a Story to Tell.” The Evans students visited the Coalition for the Homeless interviewing homeless people and giving a voice to their situations. Shardy was once homeless and is passionate about the world understanding the conditions that could lead to homelessness. She is now working on a documentary film to enlighten us all.

Later in the week, Shardy won a $10,000 college scholarship when she was named the number two National Beta Club Student of the Year. For this honor, Shardy was selected from hundreds of thousands of high school students nationwide. The National Beta Club believes in leading by serving others.
