Gov. Rick Scott’s newest appointment to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) is the president of a paving company that has faced several environmental regulation violations, the St. Petersburg Times reported Monday.
Scott named Charles W. “Chuck” Roberts III to the FFWCC this summer for a term that started Sept. 1.
Roberts, 58, of Tallahassee, has been the president of C.W. Roberts Contracting Inc. since 1976.
The company recently worked on Panama City’s new $325 million airport.
The company has faced sanctions for violations at a plant in Citrus County, and the Times cited a number of other cases where the company’s environmental practices were questioned by regulators.
Roberts told the newspaper that the company’s history didn’t come up in his interview with administration officials and he didn’t think there was a connection.
“I don’t see why that should be involved with fish and wildlife,” Roberts said.
A spokesman for Scott, Lane Wright, said he was the best qualified applicant.
