Dyer Targets Youth Education, Crime Prevention

Orlando Mayor Dyer will join Orange County Library System Board President Rich Maladecki and various other community leaders on Thursday in launching the first two of six programs of the City’s ORLANDO CARES initiative.  ORLANDO CARES is a high-impact service plan with programs that promote youth crime prevention and youth educational enhancements.

The two programs being launched are Mayor Buddy’s Book Club and COMPACT Expansion.  The other four programs that will be launched later this year are Preschool Ambassadors, The Garden, School Turnaround Project and Path Finders.

ORLANDO CARES is the City’s high-impact service plan made possible through a $200,000 Cities of Service Leadership Grant awarded to Orlando in June 2010, funded jointly by the Rockefeller Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The grant enabled Orlando to hire a Chief Service Officer who is responsible for developing and implementing the high-impact service plan. This plan builds on existing volunteer programs and aims to engage more residents, businesses and community groups in service efforts that address the City’s priorities of youth education and youth crime prevention.

Through the grant, a Mayor’s Service Advisory Council was created in the fall of 2010, made up of hundreds of key community partners and stakeholders, who designed the ORLANDO CARES programs through a collaborative process.  The advisory council will continue to be involved in the initiative, providing feedback, making recommendations and assessing progress throughout the programs.
