On Thursday, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will put on his workman’s clothes and assist Freeport Fountains in the rebuilding effort of the Lake Eola Fountain from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, at Lake Eola Park. Dyer will be joined by District 4 City Commissioner Patty Sheehan.
Dyer and Sheehan will work along side construction staff to help secure and seal the green acrylic panels that form the skin of the fountain. They will also help secure piping that will be used to control the sprayers and water jets on the fountain.
The $1.6 million renovation and refurbishment to the fountain includes the installation of more than 200 LED lights to make it more energy-efficient and less costly to maintain. Other renovations include installation of 75 new green acrylic panels and lightning protection, electrical and mechanical upgrades and pump replacement.
The new fountain will also have sound system coordination capabilities which will allow for water and light displays choreographed to music played through Lake Eola Park’s recently upgraded sound system. At the Firework at the Fountain event on July 4th, the City will feature the recently renovated Lake Eola Fountain and for the first time the event will include a patriotic water, light and sound show for attendees immediately following the fireworks.
The historic fountain, a central feature of Lake Eola Park in Downtown Orlando since its installation in 1957, was damaged by lightening during a thunderstorm in August 2009. A temporary fix which allowed water to flow from the iconic fountain was undertaken in May 2010.
