The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) split Florida in two divisions, Tampa and Miami.
New Special Agents in Charge took command in Tampa and Miami field divisions according to a recent DEA announcement.
With Florida now consisting of two Drug Enforcement Administration divisions, Miami and Tampa, the organization said it will be more responsive and better equipped to address changing drug threats.
Originally, the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) sat in Miami. Now, Tampa has a SAC of its own.
The state, divided horizontally, now sees Tampa field division covering areas north of Fort Pierce and west of Highlands County and Okeechobee County. Miami has oversight over the southern part of the state down to Key West.
The mission of the Drug Enforcement Administration is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations and principal members of organizations, involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States; and to recommend and support non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on the domestic and international markets.
