Dr. Phillips Water Polo, Women’s Lacrosse, Softball cruise into District Championships

Sophomore Jillian Goulden scored a team-high six goals and added an assist and two steals to lead Women’s Water Polo to a 21-0 demolition of University in the District Semifinal at the Aquatic Center. Junior Allie Magrino hit for four goals, three assists and two steals and senior Heather MacNeil finished with three goals and a steal as DP cruised to their record-tying 17th victory of the season. The Panthers got out of the gate sluggishly in the opening quarter but took a 4-0 lead before exploding for ten goals in the second quarter and another six in the third. Meredith Canty had a strong game offensively, with two goals and two assists, as well as defensively with four steals. Ricky Price also fared well with a pair of goals, four assists and a steal. Nine different players scored withMegan Hallson, Cindy Cheng, Angela Algee and Jacqueline James completing the scoring brigade. Marissa Goodrum tallied nine saves and Jessica Robinson came on the second half to register five more to secure the team’s third shutout of the year. DP (17-5) has now won 12 consecutive games and will vie for the District Championship tonight vs. Boone at 6:00.

Men’s Water Polo jumped out to a 13-0 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way in a 23-4 dismantling of Timber Creek in the District Semifinal. Ian Supralit up the cage with five goals to go with three assists and four steals while Evan Staton (four goals, two assists, four steals) and Barrett Brinker (four goals, assist, steal) had exceptional nights as well. Reed Davis and Ian Perkins had identical stat lines with three goals, three assists and two steals each. Nate Hamner and freshman Jack Campbell each put two in the back of the net to complete the scorecard. Goaltender Nik Lachinski continued his sparkling play with ten saves, allowing just one goal. The victory moves DP (19-3) into the District Championship game against Boone tonight at 7:15.

Softball shut down Cypress Creek, 7-0, in the semifinal round of the District Tournament, which means the Panthers (14-12) get an automatic bid to the Regional Tournament. After waiting out a long 11-inning game one, the top seeded Panthers took to the field late and placed the ball in the capable hands ofCaitlyn Jones and the sophomore delivered, allowing just two hits and striking out a season-high 11, top pick up the victory. Offensively the attack was steady lead by Marisa Lagos, who went 2 for 3 with a ruin scored. Kalie Hernandez went 2 for 2 with a bases-loaded walk to score Kaley Eastwood, who was also 1 for 3 with a big double in a four-run sixth inning that put the game away. Senior Sarah Lang also came with a big double, scored twice and drove in a run. For coach Ralph King, it was his 200th career victory and for the team, it’s a bid to the District Championship game against Boone Thursday at 7:00 pm.

Women’s Lacrosse earned another trip to the District Championship after hammering host Freedom, 14-3, in the semifinal. Elizabeth Hales and Cymber Larkinfinished the night with four goals each while Michaela Decker and Jimena Davila each scored twice. Jessica Clark picked up a goal and an assist, Min Jang scored a goal and posted two interceptions. Nicole Mikheal registered six saves in the cage as the Panthers (15-2) will move on to battle Lake Nona for the District Championship Thursday at 7:00 pm at Freedom.

Senior Night was extra special for Men’s Volleyball as they arose from the ashes of a two-game deficit to stun Olympia, 11-25, 27-29, 25-20, 25-13, 15-11.Kevin Rocklein led the Panthers (12-7) with 14 kills, four blocks and five digs while Alberto Feliciano finished with nine kills and nine digs. Feliciano as well as fellow seniors Justin Soffer, Josh Richards, Matt Millay, Matt Rosenthal and Nana Kwarteng were honored prior to the game. DP will travel to Bishop Moore tonight before closing out the regular season on the road at Boone and Apopka next week.

Baseball also celebrated Senior Day prior to taking on visiting Wekiva and went on to defeat the Mustangs, 5-2, to improve to 19-5 on the season. Senior Mike Flaherty picked up his sixth win on the hill, posting three innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. DP scored three runs in the first inning and added a run in the fourth and fifth innings. Senior Mitchell Rutherford allowed just one hit and struck out one in the final two innings to earn the save. SeniorMike Marinaccio went 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and scored twice. Senior Dan Autiello is back in the lineup and went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, knocking in two runs and scored. Junior Nic Strasser (double, run), senior Ronnie Mitchell (single, RBI) and senior Jakob Probst (single, RBI) filled out the offense. The Panthers will close out the regular season this afternoon against Edgewater.

Flag Football got back on track after a tough weekend with a 7-6 victory over West Orange to improve to 9-2 on the season. The Panthers will head up to Apopka Friday for the Metro West Conference Championship and will host the District Tournament next week.

DP juniors Alizee Michaud and Sarah Baron will compete in the individual Tennis State Championship tournament up in Altamonte Springs. Michaud will compete in the line one singles bracket and join Baron in the line one doubles bracket as well.
