Dr. Phillips Men’s Golf stuns Olympia; Women’s Golf stays perfect; Swimming sweeps Boone

Olympia had won every golf match with DP since 2004 until yesterday at Orange Tree.  The Panthers won 243-250 over the Titans in a match that was shortened to 14 holes due to severe weather. DP (2-0) was led by junior Jonathan Sundstrom’s three-over par 59 with freshman Zack Justice (four-over 60), senior Ben Huizinga (62) and sophomore Jacob Huizinga (62) completing the field. The Panthers  travel to Stoneybrook West to take on West Orange Monday afternoon.

Led by sophomores Sophie Benetti and Mao Young, DP Women’s Golf cruised to their second straight victory , 183-231, over visiting Lake Nona. Benetti fired two-over par 38 while Young came into the clubhouse at four over par 40. Rounding out the scorcard for the Panthers were senior Mindy Schwartz with 52 and sophomore Abby Goodin at 53. DP will host Circle Christian today at Bay Hill.

In the season-opening dual meet for both schools, Dr. Phillips Women’s Swimming started with a dominating victory in the 200 medley relay and never looked back in a 195-84 thrashing of visiting Boone. Megan Hallson, Heather MacNeil, Rikki Price and Sunny Zhu kickstarted the Panthers (1-0) in the medley while the 200 free relay of Cindy Cheng, Angela Algee, Sunny Zhu and Allie Magrino followed up with another victory. In the final event, Magrino, Algee, Cheng and Emily Kliewer took home the 400 free relay. DP  won seven of the eight individual events with Allie Magrino capturing the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle while Angela Algee won both the 100 and 200 freestyle. Heather MacNeil was first in the 100 breaststroke, Cindy Cheng took the 100 fly and Rikki Price rounded out the victors in the 100 backstroke. 

Men’s Swimming also opened their 2012 season with an emphatic victory over visiting Boone, 210-86, winning every event as well as finishing 1-2 in all three relays. The 200 medley relay team of Anshul Devnani, Gabe Baytan, Evan Olivares and Eduardo Macias set the stage with a dominating victory. In the 200 free relay, Ian Perkins, Evan Staton, Ian Supra and John Meisenheimer proved they deserve to be mentioned as podium contenders at year’s end while in the 400 free relay, Perkins, Supra, Staton and Macias completed the DP relay sweep. Individually, double winners included Ian Perkins in the 100 and 200 free and John Meisenheimer in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 fly. Ian Supra claimed the 50 free, Chris Ohe took the 100 backstroke, Gabe Baytan won the 100 breast and Eduardo Macias brought home the 500 free. 

DP Men’s and Women’s Bowling opened up with impressive wins over visiting Evans yesterday at World Bowl. Taylor Gilman led the ladies with a 168 high game in the Panthers’ 1929-1201 victory over the Trojans. On the men’s side, A.J. Dottina’s 629 series was nearly 3/4 of the entire Evans team score in DP’s 2524-885 victory. Both teams travel to Carter Bowl to take on West Orange this afternoon.

Women’s Volleyball saw Hannah Schaible register 18 digs on defense but the Panthers fell in straight sets to host Lake Highland, 25-20, 25-19, 26-24. DP (3-2) hostsWekiva tonight.
