Domestic Violence Victims Flock to Harbor House Following Campaign

An additional 110 victims of domestic violence turned up at Harbor House on Friday afternoon, after a campaign to raise community awareness on the warning signs of domestic abuse was executed earlier in the day.

More than 100 volunteers participated in the City of Orlando’s ‘It Takes Courage’ campaign on Friday morning, delivering door hangers at 24 apartment complexes over a three-hour period. Volunteers placed close to 8,500 door hangers throughout the community.

The group was joined by Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney and representatives of Harbor House as part of Heart of Florida United Way Days of Caring.

The ‘It Takes Courage’ campaign was launched on August 23, by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Rooney and Harbor House.  The campaign aims to educate the community to the warning signs of domestic abuse and empower survivors to take control of their lives, thereby creating safer communities.   The City has seen a dramatic increase in domestic violence over the last three years.

Harbor House of Central Florida seeks to eliminate domestic violence by providing safety, shelter, counseling, education, advocacy and justice.
