A State Representative who is a Democratic statewide candidate was arrested at the Republican Florida Governor’s office.
Florida State Representative Angie Nixon, who is currently a Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, was arrested after participating in a sit-in demonstration in Governor Ron DeSantis’ office over what she calls “rigged congressional maps.”
Rep. Angie Nixon, Tsi Day Smyth, Matt Grocholske, and Ashe were arrested at Governor Ron DeSantis’ office for protesting against “unconstitutional, partisan gerrymandering” of Florida congressional maps, but all were released.
The new congressional maps in Florida give a political advantage to Republicans over Democrats.
“I will not allow our rights and representation to be taken away in silence,” Democratic Rep. Angie Nixon said. “At a time when people need their leadership to step up and govern, Gov. DeSantis and the Republican-controlled legislature in Florida are playing politics with people’s lives. I was arrested today along with outraged constituents demanding action instead of doing the job taxpayers send them to Tallahassee for.”
The Florida Democrat called for the legislature to revisit the Constitution they claim to uphold so that we can have representative maps.
“My commitment has always been to the people of my district and to the Constitution I swore to uphold, not to any political party or agenda,” Rep. Angie Nixon said. “I will continue to honor that commitment by fighting against injustice, defending our democracy, and demanding action on the issues that matter most to the people we serve.”
According to her Senate campaign, Angie Nixon is a Florida State Representative, union organizer, and mother born and raised in Jacksonville who has spent her career fighting for hardworking Floridians. In the State House, she expanded childcare, took on corporate price-gouging, and now she led the fight against Governor DeSantis’ unfair voting maps.
Angie Nixon is running for U.S. Senate as a progressive Democrat to lower costs, raise wages, and “build a people-powered government that puts families first, not greedy billionaires.”
