DeLand Driver who Fled After Killing Pedestrian, Arrested

A DeLand man who struck a woman on Wednesday as she attempted to cross Spring Garden Avenue in Volusia County and left her to die, has been arrested, troopers said.

Juan Hernandez Islas, 47, the driver who fled the scene on Wednesday, December 29, after he struck and killed 44-year-old Celina Caprescecco on Spring Garden Avenue near West Talton Avenue, was located and arrested.

Caprescecco, who was taken to the Halifax Hospital, died from her injuries.

Following the crash, troopers scanned the area near the crash site, after witnesses informed that a white 1997 Chevy Ventura was seen fleeing the scene traveling south, turning east on Camphor Lane.

FHP was able to locate the vehicle which sustained damage to the right front area and was missing the right front light assembly, near by.

Islas was booked into the Volusia County Jail on December 30, without bond.  He has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and driving without a driver’s license.
