Daytona Beach Police Shoot Man holding Woman at Knife Point

imagesA man was shot by a police officer as he held a woman at knife point, early on Wednesday morning, Daytona Police said.

The shooting happened at a home on Franklin Street and Magnolia Avenue in Daytona Beach, a few blocks from Bethune-Cookman University.

According to police, Jermaine Green refused to drop the knife even though he was ordered to do so. Instead, he started to stab the woman in the chest. Police fired several shots, striking Green.

Green was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but is expected to survive.  According to news reports, Green is a former NFL player.

The woman, Katrina Johnson, 37 was also hit with a bullet, and is expected to be okay.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Michael Chitwood said, officers had no other choice but to fire on Green.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as is customary, is investigating the police-officer shooting.
